THE CLIMATE

The region between Alicante and Murcia or the southern part of the Costa Blanca and the northern part of the Costa Calida is a small paradise of mild temperatures. The hilly hinterland protects this area against the wind of the Meseta, through which the temperatures are the entire year pleasant to name: in wintertime about 16 until 22 degrees Celcius and in summertime not too warm with a temperature of about 30 degrees Celcius. Besides the sun shines more than 300 days per year and the humidity is very low. This results in a perfect combination of sea, subtropical climate, many light and clean air. On top of this the presence of salt lakes and stretches of pinewoods add to the healthy surroundings. All these elements together have an amazingly favorable effect on your health. Complaints as consequence of rheumatism, gout or lung trouble can decrease substantially through the climatic influence of this region. In short, here you will find the best and healthiest climate of Spain. Recently the World Healths Organization (WHO) declared the province of Murcia having the cleanest air in Europe.

Please find below a graph which shows the climate data of Murcia and surroundings.

BEACHES

Along the coast of the Costa Calida are many beautiful beaches, both naturally as artificial constructed. They are considerable calmer than the beaches along the northern situated Costa Blanca and the southern situated Costa del Sol.

The water along the Costa Calida is very clear what attracts many sportsdivers.

Please find below a selection of beaches from Águilas till Cabo Roig.

Águilas
This is a small fishermen village where during sunny days lots of local people come to the beaches to enjoy the water. The beaches are not very long because of the many small bays. The water in these bays is very clean and clear. The sandy beaches are also very clean and they offer a wide range of watersports like diving and snorkeling. At the beach there are many kiosks located where cold drinks and delicacies can be bought.

Mazarrón
This place has various small rocky bays with small sand beaches. The beaches as well as the water are very clean. The beaches are very suitable to practice many kinds of watersport such as sailing and windsurfing. The rock bottom in combination with its fauna make this place very popular for divers. There are several kiosks for cold drinks and snacks and for the rent of parasols and sunbeds. Furthermore a baywatch is present.

Cartagena
This is a city with an important port. Because of this important harbor character there is a lot of industry that makes this piece of coast less attractive for beach visit.

Calblanque
This is a nature park that is protected by Unesco that also has four beautiful sandy beaches. Because of the protected character there are no facilities (watersport and kiosks) available. Extremely suitable for beach walks or bird-watchers.

Mar Menor
This is a large inland sea of about 170 square kilometres. The coastline is more than 70 km long and accommodates many nice villages as San Pedro del Pinatar, Los Alcazares, Islas Menores and Playa Honda.

A warm wind in combination with the little depth of the water results in a pleasant temperature of the water (about 4 degrees higher than the water of the Mediterranean). It is already in the preseason pleasant of temperature. These circumstances make the Mar Menor very popular to practice a wide range of watersports. On all beaches along the Mar Menor all facilities regarding watersports are present: rental of equipment and classes.

The Mar Menor has many beautiful beaches with water of very little depth which are not yet crowded by the mass tourism. Along the entire coastline there are rental possibilities for parasols and sunbeds, kiosks for refreshments and fastfood and at walking distance restaurants of different classes.

La Manga
The Mar Menor is divided from the Mediterranean by a spit of land of 22 kilometres long, called La Manga del Mar Menor. The sandy beaches along this spit are between 100 and 800 meters wide and have clear waters. These circumstances make La Manga a paradise between two seas. At these beaches are many nautical clubs located where all possible watersport can be practised. The beaches are very busy with several kiosks and beachstands.

San Pedro del Pinatar
This village has a long and popular beach which is, because of its size, still very tranquil. There are no facilities like kiosks and rental of watersport equipment, only a lifeguard is present.

Cabo Roig
This is a very small and beautiful beach which is very popular among tourists and local population. Beachstands and rental facilities (parasols and sunbeds) are present.

MUD BATHS

The Mar Menor (especially in the vicinity of Loan Pagán) offers the largest therapautic open air mudbath of Europe. The mud is well-known for its many minerals what stimulates the healing process. A mudbath treatment is recommended for skin problems, rheumatism, arthritis, throat infections and rehabilitation.

The waters of the Mar Menor are rich in minerals as magnesium, calcium, sodium, iodine, bromide and fluoride. This water in combination with a mudbath is very effective against arthritis and rheumatism. Specialized residences offer advanced treatments, like a hydromassage bath, all under supervision of medical specialist.
